A More Optimistic Crystal Ball For 2021

Russ ReederDecember 11, 20205 min read

2020 tested every leader, every company, and every operating model. But amid the disruption, something remarkable happened: organizations that had been debating digital transformation for years accomplished it in months. The pandemic didn’t just accelerate change — it proved that change is possible at a speed most leaders didn’t believe.

Looking ahead, there are reasons for optimism. Distributed work has proven that productivity doesn’t require proximity. Companies that embrace flexible operating models will attract better talent and operate more efficiently. The old argument that ‘people need to be in the office to be productive’ has been permanently debunked.

Cloud adoption is accelerating, and with it, the ability for smaller companies to compete with enterprises on technology capability. The democratization of infrastructure means the best ideas win, not the biggest budgets.

Customer expectations have permanently shifted. Companies that invested in digital customer experience during the pandemic are now operating with a structural advantage. Those that didn’t are scrambling to catch up.

The leaders who will thrive in 2021 and beyond are the ones who treat 2020 not as an anomaly but as a preview. The pace of change isn’t going back to normal. The organizations that build operating models for continuous adaptation — not periodic transformation — will define the next decade.

The crystal ball says: the future belongs to the adaptable. Build your organization accordingly.
