It’s Time To Build A New Strategic Plan: Here’s How
If your strategic plan was written before 2020, it’s obsolete. The assumptions it was built on — about markets, customers, competitors, and how work gets done — have fundamentally changed. The question isn’t whether to build a new plan. It’s how to build one that’s resilient enough for a world that doesn’t stop changing.
Start with a clear-eyed assessment of reality. Where are you today? Not where you planned to be — where you actually are. Revenue, margin, market position, team capability, customer health. Honesty is the foundation of good strategy.
Next, define what winning looks like in 12 months. Not five years — twelve months. In a rapidly changing environment, long-range plans are fiction. Short-range plans with clear outcomes are actionable. You can extend the horizon later once you’ve demonstrated the ability to execute on a shorter one.
Then ruthlessly prioritize. A strategic plan with ten initiatives is a wish list. A strategic plan with three initiatives, each with clear ownership, measurable outcomes, and weekly cadence, is an execution engine.
Build in adaptation. The plan will be wrong in some way you can’t predict today. That’s not a failure of planning — it’s reality. Build quarterly checkpoints where you assess progress, update assumptions, and adjust the plan based on what you’ve learned.
The best strategic plans aren’t the most comprehensive. They’re the most executable. Build one your team can actually deliver, and you’ll outperform every competitor with a beautiful slide deck and no execution discipline.
