Manager Or Leader: How To Recognize The Difference And Harness The Power Of Effective Leadership

Russ ReederJuly 28, 20236 min read

Every manager is in a role of authority. They can assign tasks, approve time off, and write performance reviews. But authority doesn’t make someone a leader. Leadership is earned through behavior, not bestowed through title.

The difference shows up in how people respond. Teams follow managers because they have to. They follow leaders because they want to. That distinction is the entire game.

Managers focus on process: are the tasks getting done? Are the deadlines being met? Are the reports filed? Leaders focus on people and outcomes: is the team growing? Are we solving the right problems? Are we building something that matters?

The best organizations have both. They need managers who keep the trains running and leaders who decide where the trains should go. The problem is when organizations promote great individual contributors into management roles and assume leadership will follow. It rarely does without intentional development.

The HEAR framework is a leadership development tool, not a management tool. Honesty builds trust. Empathy builds connection. Accountability builds reliability. Respect builds loyalty. These aren’t things you can mandate through a management process — they’re things you model through leadership behavior.

If you’re a manager who wants to become a leader, start here: ask your team what they need from you, listen to the answer, and change your behavior accordingly. That’s leadership in its simplest form.

Authority is given. Leadership is earned. Every day.
