Life Balance Lessons For The 2021 Executive
For decades, we’ve talked about ‘work-life balance’ as if work and life are opposing forces on a scale. That framing is fundamentally wrong, and the pandemic exposed it. When your office is your living room, your commute is a walk to the kitchen, and your kids are your coworkers, the line doesn’t blur — it disappears.
The better frame is life balance. Work is part of life — an important part, but not the whole thing. The question isn’t how to balance work against life. It’s how to build a life where work, family, health, and personal growth each get the attention they deserve.
For executives, this requires intentionality. Your calendar will fill itself with meetings, crises, and demands if you let it. The only way to protect time for the non-work parts of life is to schedule them with the same discipline you schedule a board meeting.
That means putting your kid’s soccer game on the calendar and treating it like an investor call. It means blocking time for exercise and guarding it. It means being honest with your team about the fact that you have a life outside work — which gives them permission to have one too.
The leaders who burn out aren’t the ones who work hard. They’re the ones who work hard without building recovery, relationships, and meaning into their rhythm. Life balance isn’t about working less. It’s about living more deliberately.
Lead by example. Show your team that it’s possible to be excellent at your job and present in your life. That’s the real competitive advantage.
